We leave the hustle and bustle of Zurich on our way to Kyburg Castle, which is located in a quaint little village. A short walk to the Castle and a stroll around the grounds. As you will notice the architecture is changing to what the Swiss call "half timber" houses. At the Castle they had animals calved out of massive tree trunks.
Next stop is Winterhur and Technorama, which is a Science Museum. Possibly not the best choice for 2 adults without any young people with us, never the less we paid our entry so we were going to make the most of it. There is a short video of some of the fun we had.
Then we go to Ebersberg a former artillery fort which was carved into rock without machinery to keep it a secret from neighbouring Germany. Well it was so well hidden still to this day that we didn't find it and instead I led John up an impossible road and he was forced to do a 16 point turn on the edge of a precipice.
We are in the alluvial plain of the River Thur and there is agriculture for as far as the eye can see. Next Stop Rhine Falls one of Europes largest waterfalls with 700,000 litres of water cascading over 150m wide, 23m high cascades. We are now at about 37ºc and not a cloud in sight and there are big walks to get down to the falls and then back up to the car park. My gallant hero of a hubby did the extra mile in the hot sun to fetch the car for his over heated, exhausted damsel!
His damsel, delirious with heat exhaustion then led the gallant hero up over a Cycle and Pedestrian walk way (in the car) for a good 500m, luckily there was an escape point! We then stop at Schaffhausen which is a maze of narrow streets, a cultural heritage which is both gothic and baroque. Schaffhausen takes you back in time with Oriel windows (something we have learned) and richly decorated facades. Some lunch and a stroll and we are off again.
Then it is off to St Gallen, our next stop for the night via small villages on Bodingsee (the lake) and this looks like a really well utilised beach area with families off for an afternoon on the lake with tubes and buckets and spades.
Then into St Gallen, check in and take the cable car up for a swim - John is keen, I am not! The lakes are cool but not unbearable - apparently the shower was icy cold. John had a swim then we took the cable car back down into the Old town for a beer - which landed up being a few beers, a few wines and a Limoncello - a meal and a headache the next morning.
Oh yes, my funny face is gee I am dizzy after one Aperol Spritz! It was a strong one - thing about saying you are from Australia, is that everyone loves the Aussies! Below is a short clip of some of the different scenery we passed today, I didn't include more beautiful lake scenery but there was about 30 mins of that as we passed Zellemsee and Bodingsee. Enjoy and til next time - we are off to Davos today.
