Ah, 1964—what a time to be born! The Beatles were all over the airwaves, and people everywhere were going wild for “A Hard Day’s Night.” Meanwhile, across the ocean, in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), I made my entrance into a world that was hitting all the right notes. Cassius Clay, soon to be Muhammad Ali, won the heavyweight title, and the Concorde took its first test flight. It's almost like the world was speeding up, getting ready for the future—no doubt because it knew I’d soon be part of it.
While I may not have been paying attention to the Mustang's debut or the Tokyo Olympics just yet, the world seemed to be having a great time. And speaking of great times, golf was about to become my future obsession. 1964 had it all: music, sporting achievements, and historic moments. I like to think the year’s energy gave me a head start.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of that very important year, my best friend, the love of my life—John, hubby, Skeet, Sweet, Thomp, Thommo, and Thompie—has organised a fabulous festival for moi! How lucky am I? So, how did it all start?
Well, with my family being the most important thing to me, I wanted to spend this special time with them. I’m not one for being the centre of attention—unless I’m winning a golf tournament, of course—so no big party. Instead, we wanted something where everyone could join in. My mum has always wanted to do a cruise. For her 80th, we all chipped in and got her a cruise ticket, but COVID dashed those plans. Neil, my brother-in-law, has always dreamed of cruising to Alaska, and I’ve always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild. My favourite aunt, who also happens to be Mum’s closest friend, lives in Canada. John and I have long wanted to experience the Rocky Mountaineer and the Icefield Parkway. My sister Jen loves cruising but isn’t fond of the cold, while my sister-from-another-mister, Sue, hates cruises and the cold but is as loyal as they come.
And so, the "Festival of Shaz" was born, lovingly planned by John.
